Power Outages and Safety
If there’s an electrical outage or fault in your area, you’ll need to contact your energy distributor. They’re responsible for the supply of energy to your property – that is, the poles and wires, gas pipes, and connections.
Power Outages
From time to time you may experience power outages. These can be caused from both planned and unplanned outages.
It is important that with any outages to keep clear of any fallen powerlines and report these to your local distributor per the numbers listed below.
Call 000 in case of emergency or if there is medical assistance required.
Planned Outages
At times, there may be a need to interrupt your power supply so contractors can safely carry out essential upgrades or maintenance to the electricity network in your area/building.
LPE and/or your distributor will notify you in advance of any planned outage, providing the date, time, and expected duration so you can plan accordingly.
Unplanned Outages
Are typically caused from weather conditions such as storms and extreme weather conditions, or damage to local distributors infrastructure.
What to Do
There are a number of things to check incase of a power outage.
- Check your wall sockets and switches to see if any appliance is working
- Check your switchboard inside your property to see if all switches are On and that nothing has tripped your safety switch
- Check if it is only your property effected or if your neighbours also have no power
Try turning the main switch back on, as this can sometimes restore power. If the power continues to trip, there may be an electrical fault or a problem with an appliance.
If you think an appliance is faulty, stop using it straight away. If you’re not sure what’s causing the issue, speak with a licensed electrician. For your safety, please don’t attempt any electrical repairs yourself.
We recommend that all households have a plan incase of power outages. Please click on the following link to download our Power Outage Kit.
You can also visit Power Outage Plan website and use their checklist to help you and your support people to prepare for a potential loss of power.
