What is a Smart Meter?

A Smart Meter digitally measures in real-time, when and how much electricity is used at your premises. It sends this information back to LPE remotely.  Smart Meters are being rolled out to our customers in Queensland as part of the Power of Choice Reform– which is a part of national electricity metering reforms designed to provide you with greater knowledge about your energy usage. This means that you can understand where your energy is going and manage it more effectively – plus there is no need for manual meter readings. 

We know that living in a world where everything is ‘smart’ can get old, but this is the technology for the future, and it will help to provide you with power and savings in your electricity dealings. Smart meters are chock full of useful info to tell you about your energy usage.

LPE is even able to install them for you, and they fit perfectly with our plan to educate and empower people about their own electricity.

 Why are they any better than the old meters?

Smart meters with remote communications-enabled offer many benefits, including:

  • Information about your usage and billing
  • Updated and improved solar technology
  • They allow for more flexible (and frequent) billing cycles – at LPE customers with Smart Meters are billed monthly
  • Better identification of potential supply issues or problems that can be fixed quickly
  • Remote access – this means easier connection and no more meter reads!
  • They inform the Australian Government about our energy needs so that they can plan for the best future and hopefully reduce costs overall

Obviously, we are a big fan of Smart Meters. But there are some things you should look out for.

  • The first thing is increased charges - Smart Meters can incur an additional charge. Most electricity retailers will pass on this meter charge to customers, however, at this time LPE will not be passing on this charge to you. 
  • The electricity tariff you receive may change
  • There may be a short interruption to electricity supply to allow for the installation of the new Smart Meter.
